What would you say if I suggested you invest £22,000 into your old relationship? “I think not” is probably an overly polite euphemism to the counter suggestion you’d actually be most likely to make! As silly as it sounds however, in the average UK divorce, this is what each party is doing. According to the actuarial boffins over at Aviva, the average UK divorce costs £43,998.
That means people are investing an average of £22,999 each into their old relationships!!! I don’t know about you, but I’d much rather spend that money on my new life going forward. I’d rather spend it paying off those pesky credit cards or maybe taking the kids on a couple of great holidays. I’d also prefer to not waste the next two years of my life fighting over every scrap of money that is available (whilst simultaneously blowing over 20 grand to grab what is left).
For me personally, I think I’d be far better off spending the next two years finally learning to play that guitar that’s been leaning against the wall in the corner gathering dust and meeting a friend for a drink without being subjected to the Spanish inquisition when I got home about whether I’ve been faithful or not.
Thankfully, there is a solution to squandering my life savings on a drawn out and expensive argument at the end of a relationship. That solution is Family Mediation. Family Mediation is a process where a separating couple works directly with a Family Mediation Council Accredited (FMCA) mediator to devise a financial settlement solution (and/or a working co-parenting plan going forward) for a mere fraction of the time and cost of a traditional, solicitor led divorce.
At New Landscape Mediation, the average cost per person to reach a fully settlement solution (including an outcome document that can be turned into a legally binding court order) is £975.00 per person. What’s more, as we provide our clients with clear cut instructions about things like how to gather the various paperwork this process requires, in most cases we are able to assist divorcing couples in reaching this agreement within 10 weeks of their first contact with the service. When you compare this to the cost of doing it “the old way”, it’s a no-brainer really.
If saving a minimum of £10,000 each on your divorce to spend on your new life going forward sounds like it might be a good idea for you, then please contact New Landscape Mediation on 01279 211 657 for a fully confidential, no obligation discussion of your needs.
